Where to Ride - Te Mata Peak

Te Mata Peak mountain bike tracks from the saddle car park, Havelock North

Te Mata Peak Mountain Bike Tracks

Our local riding spot just up the hill from our Havelock North bike shop. There is a sealed road to the top of the Peak, narrow, but okay for driving shuttles and for the road riders. On any given day there will be a number of tourists at the top lookout, enjoying the enormous vista from the mountains to the sea.

There is a mixture of walking, mountain biking, and some shared use trail. Hilton Taylor from Revolution Bikes has been working with the Te Mata Peak Trust and the Hastings District Council to develop the Peak as a mountain bike destination. We are pleased that we now have three new trails and more pending. The photo above shows the trails converging at the  saddle car park.

The trails designated for mountain bikers ONLY are on the map below. Note they are directional. There are a number of other shared use trails that you will see signposted - mainly in the area between the main gates car park and the saddle (water-tanks) car park underneath Peak House.

Singletrack winds around farmland, some native forest and a small patch of redwood trees. This is steep terrain in some areas so stick to the right grade tracks for your riding ability.
